Edwards Air Force Base is located in Kern County in Southern California, about 22 miles northeast of Lancaster. It is the home of the Air Force Test Center, Air Force Test Pilot School, and NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center. It is the Air Force Materiel Command center for conducting and supporting research and development of flight, as well as testing and evaluating aerospace systems from concept to combat. It also hosts many test activities conducted by America's commercial aerospace industry.

Edwards Air Force Base
Has Poisoned Groundwater with PFOS & PFOA
Groundwater is contaminated with 277,000 parts per trillion (ppt) of PFOS & PFOA, according to the Final Site Inspection for AFFF Areas at Edwards Air Force Base, California, August, 2018. While the EPA fails to regulate these substances, several states have set maximum contaminant levels under 20 ppt for groundwater while Harvard scientists say 1 ppt is potentially harmful to public health.

Edwards Air Force Base Superfund Site
Edwards Air Force Base's primary mission is aircraft research and development and it covers approximately 301,000 acres in Kern, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Counties, California. Spills and poor disposal practices have resulted in the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), metals and other chemicals to the surface, subsurface, and groundwater. Following immediate actions to protect human health and the environment, investigations, cleanup, and long-term monitoring are ongoing.
The approximately 14,000 employees at Edwards AFB obtain some of their drinking water from wells located within three miles of the South Base. These wells are not impacted by contamination and are continually tested to ensure the water is compliance with all drinking water standards. Lancaster, Boron, and other small communities are located miles away from base operations and are not impacted by contamination on the base. Indoor air in some buildings located above or near VOC-contaminated media is under investigation to ensure base workers are not exposed to contamination from vapor intrusion. Some surface water is threatened by seeps of trichloroethene (TCE)-contaminated groundwater in the AFRL.
Edwards is also home to the threatened desert tortoise and its designated critical habitat, which encompasses 65,569 acres. Measures are taken to protect the desert tortise are not exposed to contamination in soil, especially at the former base landfill.
The Main Base, including NASA Armstrong, and South Base at the western edge of Rogers Dry Lake are primarily used for research and maintaining, testing, and refueling aircraft. Large amounts of fuel and solvents have been spilled and poor disposal practices have resulted in the release of VOCs, metals and other chemicals to the ground.
There is extensive groundwater contamination in these areas.
The Air Force Research Laborary, or AFRL, is a remote elevated ridge in the eastern portion of the base where rocket engine testing activities resulted in four major and extensive groundwater contamination plumes (PCE, TCE, perchlorate) and DNAPLs in fractured bedrock, an abandoned sanitary landfill containing heavy metals, and an area where electroplating wastes were dumped.
The North Base, located five miles northeast of the Main Base area, includes the former NASA Jet Propulsion Laborary and other former research and development program areas. The historic activities at North Base, including a drum storage site at the northern end of Rogers Dry Lake, unlined surface impoundments where wastes were poured during the 1960s and 1970s, and other various spills or poor disposal practices resulted in subsurface and groundwater contamination.

Groundwater: High Risk Contamination in the groundwater has migrated over 500 feet beyond the edge of the source and there are no known barriers to contaminant migration. The potential exists of migration under the dry lake bed and then into the drinking water aquifer. Contamination is not expected to impact a beneficial source within five years. California EPA considers all groundwater to be a potential domestic or agricultural source. Connectivity exists with the South Base production wells.

Antelope Valley - East Kern Water Agency
https://www.ewg.org/tapwater/system.php?pws=CA1910045
Serves: 114,260 Data available: 2012—2017 Source: Surface water
Contaminants Detected 11 EXCEED EWG HEALTH GUIDELINES
18 Total Contaminants
EWG's drinking water quality report shows results of tests conducted by the water utility and provided to the Environmental Working Group by the California State Water Resources Control Board, as well as information from the U.S. EPA Enforcement and Compliance History database (ECHO). For the latest quarter assessed by the U.S. EPA (January 2019 - March 2019), tap water provided by this water utility was in compliance with federal health-based drinking water standards
Legal does not necessarily equal safe. Getting a passing grade from the federal government does not mean the water meets the latest health guidelines.
Legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years.
The best way to ensure clean tap water is to keep pollution out of source water in the first place.
