Costa Mesa Air National Guard Base
This military site initially began as the Santa Ana Army Base in 1942. That base closed in 1946. In the ensuing years some of the buildings on the base were sold and moved piecemeal, others became part of colleges. In 1953 the City of Costa Mesa was incorporated. In June 1955, the former SAAAB property was annexed to the City.
For a period of time in the mid-1950s a portion of the Base served as a Nike guided missile training base. The three-battery missile compound had been made operational in January 1956. Two years later, in June 1958, the Air National Guard received a five-acre parcel of land and the remaining 260 acres, including the five-acre air base water facility, was declared surplus and turned over to the GSA.
The western portion of the base is currently the Orange County Fairgrounds, and the eastern portion is currently John Wayne Airport.

The chemical of concern here is deadly trichloroethene (TCE) in the soil vapor [max.71,000 micrograms/cubic meter (µg/m3)] and in the groundwater [max.24 micrograms/liter (µg/L)]. TCE was also detected in the soil matrix samples as high as 13 micrograms/kilogram. See the letter from the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board to the Air National Guard, dated July 16, 2019.

Mesa Water District Serves: 108,000
Data available: 2012—2017 Source: Purchased surface water Contaminants Detected 11 EXCEED
EWG HEALTH GUIDELINES
26 Total Contaminants
EWG's drinking water quality report shows results of tests conducted by the water utility and provided to the Environmental Working Group by the California State Water Resources Control Board, as well as information from the U.S. EPA Enforcement and Compliance History database (ECHO). For the latest quarter assessed by the U.S. EPA (January 2019 - March 2019), tap water provided by this water utility was in compliance with federal health-based drinking water standards.
Legal does not necessarily equal safe. Getting a passing grade from the federal government does not mean the water meets the latest health guidelines. Legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years.
The best way to ensure clean tap water is to keep pollution out of source water in the first place.
