Marylanders! Please sign this petition
Could you take a minute to send this petition to Ben Grumbles, Maryland’s Secretary of the Environment, asking him to provide oversight and ensure that the Chesapeake, our drinking water, and food are safe from PFAS contamination?
The Baltimore Sun recently published a front page article about how PFAS (per-and poly fluoroalkyl substances - also known as toxic “forever” chemicals) are contaminating groundwater and surface water throughout the state.
At least 16 military bases in Maryland are releasing these dangerous chemicals into the environment. PFAS is used in fire-fighting foams. The chemicals never break down in nature and bio accumulate in humans and animals, especially aquatic life. One base, the Chesapeake Bay Naval Research Laboratory in Chesapeake Beach, has contaminated groundwater with 241,000 parts per trillion of the poisonous chemicals, while public health professionals warn us not to consume more than 1 ppt in drinking water daily.
Voluntary EPA guidelines advise the public not to drink the substances if they exceed 70 parts per trillion. The groundwater in Chesapeake Beach is 3,442 times above the EPA’s guideline. An oyster in the bay was found to contain 1.1 million parts per trillion of the toxins.
The Naval Academy in Annapolis and Fort George G Meade have contaminated the environment with massive amounts of the chemicals.
