I received an email today from someone suggesting that I was likely profiting from my PFAS work by drumming up clients for one of the law firms locally that are working with people contaminated by the military’s firefighting foam. I told him that I wasn’t working with them, but that his question caused me to think about ways to make a buck on all of this.
And then it came to me. I can bottle and sell the foam on my beach as a supplement to dishwashing liquid!
PFAS is a miraculous substance! Nothing cuts grease better than per-and poly fluoroalkyl substances. I have been working on this and I’ve discovered that one level teaspoon of foam from my beach added to a 16-ounce bottle of dishwashing detergent like Dawn makes cleaning those nasty pots and pans a snap. The grease magically disappears in seconds. Food and burnt matter quickly dissolve. You don’t have to scrub, so you no longer need those expensive PFAS-coated Teflon pans. Just rinse the suds down the drain (in Maryland, anyway.)
I’m certain I can sell this miracle detergent within Maryland, but I’m worried about customers who have expressed an interest from Vermont and other states that are more vigilant than Maryland in regulating these forever chemicals.

Sure, the water contains high amounts of PFAS and the oysters, crabs, and rockfish are too contaminated to eat. but the PFAS in the foam cuts grease better than anything I have found. Maryland says the PFAS in the river won’t hurt anyone and it does not consider PFAS to be a hazardous substance, so it should be OK to sell this stuff.
Maryland customers only. (at this point.)
